The free version is a full working editing program just without some of the features of the paid versions such as capturing, and with a limited number of tracks and timelines. There are 3 versions of Avid: MCFirst (free version), Media Composer and Media Composer Ultimate.

If you decide not to upgrade after a year you cannot upgrade this version in the future, which means if, 3 years after you bought the permanent licence, you decide you want the current version of Avid you would have to buy a completely new version. At the end of the year you have to decide whether you want to pay for the next years worth of updates or stay with the version you own. The permanent licence includes updates for a year from when you bought it. The subscription includes all future updates for Avid. If you buy a permanent licence then you pay a one off fee and you never have to pay Avid any money again. If you rent (or subscribe, the two are the same thing) then if you stop paying the software stops working.
Media Composer can be bought as a permanent licence or rented. Workgroup is aimed at broadcasters and has features like a “loudness meter”, MXF export, a loudness meter and other features broadcaster need. There are two version of EDIUS – EDIUS Pro and EDIUS Workgroup. you pay once and then choose whether to upgrade when the next paid upgrade comes along.
